Coco Gauff continued her impressive run on clay as she progressed to the second straight WTA Masters 1000 final.
The American overcame No. 8 seed Zheng 7-6(3), 4-6, 7-6(4) in three hours and 32 minutes in the Italian Open semifinal on Thursday. A finalist at the recent Madrid Open, Gauff became the first American in nine years to reach the summit clash in Rome.
The tournament in Rome is the last of the WTA 1000 events on clay before the French Open and the top players are looking build momentum for the major.
Earlier in the day, Jasmine Paolini kept the Italian hopes alive as she defeated USA's Peyton Stearns 7-5, 6-1 and book her spot for Saturday's finals.
