The Chicago White Sox are inventing new ways to lose.
Tuesday's was one of the most painful for the manner in which Chicago set up the Royals for an eventual Bobby Witt Jr. walk-off hit.
Here's the scene:
- White Sox take a 3-2 lead to the bottom of the ninth
- Mark Canha leads off with a single
- Drew Waters hits a popup in the infield
Waters' popup should've resulted in the first out.
Instead, it somehow snuck up on Chase Meidroth, missing his glove and landing right on the top of his head.

A bunt single loaded the bases before Kyle Isbel popped out for the first out.
Then, Jonathan India singled on the infield to tie the game 3-3.
And the next hitter, Witt, launched a fly ball over the centerfielder and toward the warning track for what was technically a long single since the runner on third scoring ended the game.
If Meidroth just makes the catch, there would've been some different moving parts.
The Royals won the game with just one out in the ninth, so it's not like that would've been the guy that equaled the end of the inning.
Witt's blast could've enticed a few others to come around and score, as well, if needed.
That's all hypothetical. All we know for sure is that Waters reached on a popup off the White Sox second baseman's head, then scored the walk-off run on Witt's hit. That's plenty crazy.
