Coco Gauff is hoping to clinch her first Italian Open title when she takes on 2024 French Open finalist Jasmine Paolini in the women's singles final on Saturday.
The American came through after a tough battle in the semifinals, edging Qinwen Zheng 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 in a clash that lasted over three and a half hours. While Gauff has a slight 2-1 lead in head-to-head series against Paolini, she lost their only meeting on a clay court last month -- a 4-6, 3-6 defeat in Stuttgart.
Paolini, on the other hand, is aiming to become the first home-grown champion since Raffaella Reggi's title run in 1985 at the Italian Open. She beat American Peyton Stearns 7-5, 6-1 to set up the showdown against Gauff at the Foro Italico.
After making it to the summit clash in Madrid, this is Gauff's second straight final on clay. The tournament in Rome is the last of the WTA 1000 events on clay before the French Open.
