The Pittsburgh Steelers remain in limbo with future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
While the overwhelming belief is that Rodgers will eventually sign with the Steelers at some point, the possibility remains that he could retire, something Rodgers has offered up as a possible scenario for himself.
If Rodgers doesn't sign with the Steelers for any reason, Pittsburgh will be in a tough spot, as the team doesn't have a sure starting option on the roster currently, which could leave it scouring what's left on the market for a potential solution.
Someone the Steelers could consider is former Tennessee Titans quarterback, Ryan Tannehill, who was recently floated as a potential option by On SI's Jeremy Brener.
"The Saints are Tannehill's likeliest option considering the fact that Derek Carr retired over the weekend and the team could benefit from a veteran," Brener said. "The Pittsburgh Steelers also make sense with former Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith in the same position with the team."
After a failed stint with the Miami Dolphins, Tannehill managed to resurrect his career with the Titans when Smith was his play-caller in Nashville, which led to Tannehill getting a massive $118 million extension.
After securing Pro Bowl and Comeback Player of the Year honors in 2019, Tannehill had one of his best seasons as a pro in 2020.
In all, the Titans made the playoffs three times with Tannehill under center over five seasons, and one of those postseason appearances ended in the AFC Championship Game.
Unfortunately for Tannehill, things went off the rails over his final two seasons with Tennessee. Tannehill dealt with injuries and wasn't very effective when on the field, although the Titans did a horrendous job surrounding him with help, especially along the offensive line, where Tennessee was routinely putrid.
Tannehill decided to sit out 2024 and it remains to be seen if he'll have any interest in coming back, but a reunion with Smith and a chance to start with a playoff contender in Pittsburgh might be intriguing enough to get him off the couch.
Now, is the soon-to-be 37-year-old the needle-mover the Steelers would need if they strike out on Rodgers?
Probably not, but he would offer strong competition for Mason Rudolph, and quite possibly a superior option under center if he can recapture the success he had under Smith in Nashville.
