Formula One relocates to Europe for the latter part of May and early June, beginning with today's Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola.

Oscar Piastri's dominant victory in Miami last time saw him bring a 16-point lead at the top of the drivers' standings into this weekend's race in northern Italy.

The McLaren driver claimed pole position on Saturday by around three hundredths of a second from world champion Max Verstappen, with the Mercedes of George Russell only a tenth further back.

It promised to be a gripping race in the dazzling sunshine at one of the most famous circuits in motorsport — one that only returned to the F1 schedule in 2020 after a 13-year hiatus.

Here is how the 2025 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix played out.

Who won the F1 race today?

Max Verstappen claimed his second race win of the season after a strong drive that began with him overtaking Piastri on the opening lap.

The Dutchman may have something of a reputation for the odd reckless manoeuvre, but his terrific move down the outside as they navigated the opening chicane was purely bold and brilliant driving.

Verstappen built up a commanding advantage as Piastri and Lando Norris seemed resigned to second and third, although what looked like being a procession to the chequered flag suddenly looked more interesting after a safety car was deployed on lap 46 when Andrea Kimi Antonelli's Mercedes lost power.

Verstappen pitted for fresh tyres and had both the speed and grip to pull away from the McLarens at the restart. Norris then overtook his teammate in thrilling fashion as the team allowed them to race for second.

Lewis Hamilton took fourth place after a terrific performance in the Ferrari, having qualified down in 12th.
