It wasn't too long ago that Celtics star Jaylen Brown was called 'overpaid' when he received a 5 year $285 million extension a couple offseasons ago.

Brown quickly silenced the doubters by taking home NBA Finals MVP last season.

With Shai Gilgeous-Alexander winning MVP for the 24-25 NBA season, he is now eligible for a contract that makes Brown's previous record-breaking contract look like nothing.

How much is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander eligible to make in new extension opportunity?

As the NBA continues to grow and the league salary cap increases, we are going to see players get larger extensions that we never thought were possible.

ESPN's Bobby Marks reported that if SGA waits until the 2026 offseason, he can sign an extension worth $380 million over five years.

For those not great at math, that is on average $76 million a year.

For an 82-game season, assuming a player even plays every game, that is ~$927,000 a game played.

This seems crazy in the moment, but we can't be too far down the line from seeing a player make $100 million a year on average.

With the NBA having such relevance in the country and across the world, money continues to flow into the league with it both a league for entertainment as well as a business.

The highest-paid NHL player for example is Auston Matthews.

Matthews makes about $13.25 million a season.

Matthews' contract in the NBA would make him the 120th highest-paid player, right between Daniel Gafford and Grant Williams.

This is just the start of NBA players making money like this, and it wouldn't be surprising to see Shai outside of the top five highest-paid NBA players in just a few years from now.
