AFL players' careers could be ended by dangerous tactic, claims Adam Simpson image

Adam Simpson has called out a common AFL tactic he believes is putting defenders' careers at risk, following the concussion that has placed West Coast veteran Jeremy McGovern’s future in serious doubt.

McGovern, a five-time All-Australian and Simpson’s 2018 premiership cornerstone, has been sidelined since a Round 8 head knock and is now being assessed by an independent panel.

The 33-year-old has failed to progress through concussion protocols and may be forced into medical retirement.

“We may lose one of the game’s greats”

Speaking on AFL 360 this week, Simpson expressed frustration at the lack of action on a bumping manoeuvre that went unpunished in McGovern’s case but, in his eyes, is a growing threat across the league.

“That incident there (that concussed him) ... I have seen that play against McGovern, and Harris Andrews, and Tom Barrass, and anyone who’s a ball player in the backline — I’ve seen that at least five times a week,” Simpson said.

“And now, we may lose one of the game’s greats because of a craft you learn because you’re allowed to do it.”

The bump in question came from Melbourne’s Jake Melksham, who nudged McGovern just before a marking contest, causing his head to crash into the back of Demon Harrison Petty. Melksham faced no sanction.

“Hopefully, they reflect on this, the AFL. I’m not sure of the answer, but maybe ‘hands in the back’ needs to be addressed,” Simpson added. “We may lose a player because of a tactic that’s done against him the last 10–15 years.”

McGovern has played 197 games and was West Coast’s best and fairest in 2023. His potential absence is a massive blow, not just for the club but for the game.
