Recently, the IPL governing council added a new rule to match playing conditions, and decided to add an extra 120 minutes to the stipulated time for the remainder of the Indian Premier League 2025.

Although it is a good move to avoid washouts in a crucial juncture of the season, it has also made the Kolkata Knight Riders unhappy after they faced an elimination due to an abandoned game against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Following the announcement of the rule, the Chief Executive Officer of KKR, Venky Mysore, has written about the franchise's discontent with the timing of this announcement.

The defending champions felt hard done by the rule as it could have saved their day against RCB, had it been in place beforehand. Read what he had to say.

KKR expresses discontent with 'inconsistency' in applying rules from BCCI

As per ESPNcricinfo, the KKR board has shown their understanding to the need of the extra 120 minutes to avoid matches being abandoned; however, have looked unhappy regarding when the rule was announced.

"While these mid-season changes to the rules may be necessary under the circumstances, one would have expected more consistency in the way such changes are being applied," Mysore wrote in the email to BCCI.

He, notably, also mentioned the well-known Bengaluru weather at this time of the year and thought the rule could have kept the Knight Riders alive in the competition.

"When the IPL restarted, it was clear that the first game on May 17, KKR vs RCB, was at high risk of being interrupted due to rain in Bengaluru. The forecast was there for all to see. Not only was the game washed out, but the additional 120 minutes, now being applied, may have provided a chance of at least a 5-over-a-side game," he added.

"The wash-out ended KKR's chances of making the playoffs. Such ad hoc decisions and inconsistencies in applying them are not appropriate for a tournament of this standing. I am sure you also understand why we feel aggrieved," he concluded.

Following the RCB vs KKR washout, the Lucknow Super Giants also lost their match, leaving us with only 5 teams in the competition— 3 out of them already qualified for the playoffs.

Additionally, the revised playoff dates also saw the defending champions' right to host the final due to the similar weather conditions. Below is the fixture list for the playoffs of IPL 2025.
