The opening game of this year's State of Origin series has nearly arrived with the NRL set to be heavily impacted by the showpiece event in Round 12.

Canterbury are already hit by injuries and suspension and will have to deal without their skipper Stephen Crichton and forward leader Max King for their clash against the Dolphins.

The Phins will be without their talisman Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow on Thursday night after Billy Slater picked him for Queensland.

New South Wales duo Zac Lomax and Mitch Moses will be absent for Parramatta's game against Manly, with the Sea Eagles set to start Tom Trbojevic after he was overlooked by Laurie Daley.

Penrith will be missing five starters due to their selection for the Blues. Luckily, their opponents, Newcastle, are also in a world of hurt with Kalyn Ponga away with the Maroons and Bradman Best sidelined.

The Sydney Roosters have also been hit hard with five of their players away on representative duty, while Canberra have avoided the same fate despite their stellar opening few months of the campaign.

Max King has been called into the Blues' side and his fellow front rower Daniel Suluka-Fifita has been ruled out after suffering a concussion in Round 11 to leave the team very light up front.

In a major boost, Josh Curran returns to the fold after serving a suspension and will start in the middle. Lipoi Hopoi will partner him.

Kurt Mann has been included in Queensland's extended squad as 18th man, so won't be able to play for the Dogs. Bailey Hayward takes his position at lock, while Jake Turpin will act as the utility off the bench.

Woolf has given Jake Averillo the No.1 jersey with Max Feagai brought into the backline ahead Junior Tupou

Jeremy Marshall-King has been hampered by a leg injury during the past month and the Kiwi international remains out, so Kurt Donoghoe continues at hooker.

Daniel Saifiti is also still in the casualty ward after missing the last few matches with a shoulder issue.

In even more bad news for the Phins, Tom Gilbert suffered a pec injury during his side's loss to the Warriors that will sideline him for up to three months.

Connelly Lemuelu starts in the captain's absence, with Kulikefu Finefeuiaki - who has been included in the extended QLD squad - on the opposite edge.

Oryn Keeley is the new face on the pine as he prepares to play his fourth NRL game of the season.

Dean Hawkins takes the No.7 jersey from Moses with Dylan Brown maintaining his spot at five-eighth.

Matt Doorey was originally named to start in the backrow last week but dropped out of the side with Luca Moretti taking over.

Ryles has dropped Moretti to the bench this week due to the return from suspension of Kelma Tuilagi. Meanwhile, J'maine Hopgood was overlooked for Origin selection by Slater, so he starts at lock.

Daly Cherry-Evans is out of the side after the QLD skipper was retained by Slater at halfback. Jake Arthur replaces the veteran after recording three try assists during Manly's 18-16 win over the Bulldogs in the NSW Cup.

Anthony Seibold will have to deal with the loss of even more experience after Jake Trbojevic was knocked out last week. Jazz Tevaga shifts to lock with Jake Simpkin promoted off the bench.

In some good news, Lachlan Croker will make his first appearance of the season off the bench after recovering from a knee issue.

There is also a place on the pine for Matt Lodge in the place of Caleb Navale after the veteran clocked a game-high 275 run metres and a team-high 29 tackles last week in reserve grade.

Due to the injury toll, Fletcher Sharpe has been forced to move to fullback for this game with Jack Cogger added into the halves.

Kyle McCarthy has been drafted into the centres to allow Dylan Lucas to revert to his favoured backrow spot.

Leo Thompson is back on deck after missing last week's loss to the Eels due to a concussion. However, his usual partner Jacob Saifiti is out due to a calf issue, so Tyson Frizell starts up front.
