The Boston Red Sox could be in the market for a first baseman when free agency rolls around. They could target Pete Alonso if he opts out of his contract.
Alonso signed a two-year, $54 million deal with the New York Mets, but his deal has an opt-out after this year. With how he has been playing, he should be able to find a more lucrative deal on the open market. He is still showing great power at the plate, but his average is much better than in years past. He is hitting .294 in 49 games and has a .944 OPS.
If Alonso does opt out, he should have plenty of suitors. It will not be easy for the Red Sox to land him, but The Athletic's Jim Bowden tabbed them as one of the contenders to sign him.
"If he doesn’t stay in New York, Alonso would be a fit with several teams including the (Philadelphia) Phillies (Bryce Harper would seem willing to move back to the outfield for him), (Chicago) Cubs (they would have to be interested if they lose out on Tucker), (Texas) Rangers and (Seattle) Mariners (both would benefit from his power bat and leadership, as would the Red Sox, particularly if they keep Rafael Devers at DH)," wrote Bowden.
Devers has already made it clear that he will not switch positions to play first base this year, but it is unclear if that could change in the offseason.

There were rumors about the Red Sox trading Triston Casas in the offseason. He was struggling even before his season-ending knee injury. The Red Sox adding Alonso would be a great upgrade for their lineup and give them a more reliable everyday first baseman.
