Emanuel Navarrete held onto the WBO super featherweight title, but it wouldn't be a high-profile boxing fight without some controversy.
The Mexican warrior may have won, but Charly Suarez will have plenty to talk about after the contest ended early. Navarrete (40-2-1) won via technical decision in a fight involving talks of video review.
The fight started with fireworks right away, with Navarrete and Suarez (18-1) unloading. Early on, Navarrete landed a hard right that busted Suarez's nose. In return, Suarez landed shots to Navarrete's body, attempting to take advantage of the issues the champion had during weigh-ins.
Using his signature right hand to attack, Navarrete attempted to end the fight early. Suarez was resilient, landing combinations. They landed combinations in bunches in the fifth, making it an entertaining affair.
And then the sixth round started.

There was an apparent headbutt at the start of the round that forced a cut over the left eye of Navarrete. They traded shots, Navarrete attempting to fight through the pain. He continued to fight until the start of the eighth when the referee asked the doctor to examine Navarrete.
The replay clearly showed Navarrete got hit with a punch. However, the commission claimed evidence was inconclusive following a review. Since the fight was stopped late, the judges got involved and scored it 78-75, 77-76, and 77-76 in favor of Navarrete.

The fight's ending had a similar vibe to Joshua Franco vs. Andrew Moloney 2, where it took several minutes of obvious replay before controversy struck.
Per CompuBox, Navarrete landed 98 of 366 punches (26.8%), while Suarez landed 86 of 412 shots (20.9%).
Navarrete has now won two straight and is 2-1-1 in his last four fights. An upset Suarez lost his unbeaten record. A rematch is expected as boxing fans and personalities worldwide were furious with the outcome.
“Right now I’m sad, but that is part of the game, and I know that Navarrete won the fight, but that’s part of the game. I would like to make a rematch. I want a rematch with Navarrete," Suarez said.
